QUESTIONS ABOUT CAPOEIRA

So what is capoeira? Is it a martial art or a dance?

Capoeira is a dance, a fight, a game and much more. It teaches you music, acrobatics, a new language (unless you’re a native Portuguese speaker - in this case you miss that one out), history, and a whole new view on life. Capoeira offers you an amazing opportunity to join a diverse community of people, travel the world and learn something new every day. It’s a whole world and culture on its own, and as any culture, it’s best understood from inside, so join us to try it out!

Who is teaching and what is your style of capoeira?

Our mestre is Mestre Pium (Rodrigo Quissak Machado), who started capoeira Guaratingetá, Brazil, under the guidance of Mestre Ponciano, the leader of the group Capoeira Especial Cordão de Ouro. Mestre Pium currently lives in Helsinki and has founded our group, Cordão de Ouro Finland, in January 2013.

We’re part of capoeira group called Cordão de Ouro, the largest capoeira group outside of Brazil.

The beginners’ course has already started, can I still join?

You can join our classes any time! It’s typical in capoeira that students of all levels and abilities train together. You’ll get some individual instruction in the beginning, if needed, and might need to take more breaks in the beginning before you catch up with others. First class is always free so just give it a try!

How should I dress or prepare for the classes?

As a beginner, all you need is comfortable clothes and a water bottle. You can train barefoot or wear comfortable indoor shoes, whichever you prefer. After your beginners’ course we recommend you get a white capoeira uniform to use in our trainings and events. Ask our teacher for a beginner’s discount for the uniform!

I don’t know how to do a cartwheel or a handstand. Can I attend your classes?

Of course! Capoeira is much more than acrobatics and fancy movements - though you’ll eventually learn these in our classes, too! You don’t need to be extra fit or skilled to start capoeira, all you need is an open mind and willingness to try. We start by basic exercises and simple movements and build up from there.

Do I have to register for the classes?

If you consider taking the beginners’ course, we ask you to register to ensure your place on the course. For other classes registration is not obligatory, but we strongly advice you to use the registration form to give us your contact information, so that we can keep you informed on any unexpected last minute changes.

I’m 13 years old, should I attend adults’ or kids’ classes?

It’s totally up to you! We have no strict age limit for kids’ or adults’ classes, so think about which teaching style suits you better. Are you in for a game of catch-a-capoeirista or would you prefer more organized and time-efficient approach to training? You decide. Read more about our kids’ and adults’ classes.

I need individual guidance because of my disability or other reasons. Can I attend your classes?

Of course! Capoeira has a lot to offer to anyone regardless of their background or abilities. You’re welcome to join our regular classes and bring your assistant with you if you need one. If you feel unable to join our regular classes, our adapted capoeira class might be for you. Read more about our approach to adapted capoeira.
